On a sunny, hot afternoon in Detroit, MI, the contest below unfolded in brilliant hometown-leaning fashion, almost from the direct onset. A lead-off inside-the-park homerun by Curtis Granderson proved a positive sign of things to come (witnessed just as the BaseballBigMouth.com crew were reaching our third-base side upper-deck seats) highlighted further by subsequent two-run homers by Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames. Indeed, not even a monstrous three-run shot by Robinson Canoe (off Chad Durbin) or an injury to prized up-and-comer Jair Jurrjens sullied the mood, as another Tigers-Yankees match-up goes into the books, this time Detroit prevailing by a score of 5-4. Joel Zumaya looked great, included striking out Alex Rodriguez in a key late-game spot, and Todd Jones closed it out aided by his own brilliant putout (with an assist from Guillen at first) and a game-ending double-play turned masterfully by Ramon Santiago. Long live this traditional rivalry.

Oh, for the days of the old American League East. Sure, most Tigers fans would argue that Detroit moving to the AL Centralsome time back actually benefited the team. Hard to argue that. Money-spewing behemoths Boston and New York were left far behind in favor of budget-conscious clubs like the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. But it wasn’t as it Happy Days were here again the moment the Tigers arrived in their new digs. Playing under .500 for what seemed like decades will do that to you, regardless of divisional opposition. But now that the Tigers have a good team again, The Heckler can’t help but pine for more match-ups like we saw this weekend: Yankees in town for four with playoff implications on the line. More Red Sox games. Actually playing traditional rival Toronto outside of April. Us getting a shot to beat up on Baltimore. That’s baseball.
Jurrjens wouldn’t stick around long, ending his day on the DL
There is no need to downplay the Yankees mystique. Even if you wanted to, it’s a losing cause. It’s there, no doubt. The Heckler is the first to doff his cap in this organizations direction. They have earned their respect. That being said, like last year’s playoffs proved, it just makes it that much sweeter to beat them. As it was yesterday. As it will look again someday soon. Hopefully The Heckler will have another opportunity to see it live, under another brightly-lit Comerica Park blue sky. God knows I sure enjoyed taking it all in yesterday.
